TOEFL- iBT:
(my score: 106--> read26,list29,speak23,writ28)
(note: many univs require u to have 26 points in the speaking section to offer you teaching assistantship)
(note: choose your test centre wisely...if in a test center, 2 ppl giving iBT sit nearby each other...both are bound to get distracted since you have speaking and listening section in the iBT...make sure that you know about the test centre properly)
(for all NIT-Bhopal students-> there is a center called "e-gurukul-professional testing center" opposite to British library in New market....this center is owned my our Asst. Prof. Vasudev Dehalwar of IT Dept. i personally recommend this centre as it was very peaceful and i had no difficulty throughout my test....he even arranged me a 'garam chai' in the break on my request before the speaking section :-) ....
iBT is much simpler than GRE and a "serious" prep of 15-20 days would fetch you a good score on iBT. If you can understand/follow the conversations in english movies, then listening section should not be difficult for you.....you could manage reading & writing section too without much difficulty(provided u practice)...... but speaking section is the relatively tougher one ..... so much of your prep time should go into this speaking section.
Speaking Prep:
go to google search and type: "equest toefl ibt speaking". u can find the link that has sample speaking iBT topics which are for your practice.... note that these topics are only for practice and they are not guarenteed to appear on your actual iBT.
Fix up the microphone on your PC
you should find a lonely place, lock yourself up in your room..... and start your prep.....
Open the "windows sound recorder" and record your answers by speaking upto 1/1.5 min on a single sample topic.... you may (will) do really bad for the first time .... but no problem..... listen to the response that you just spoke..... you can find No. of mistakes in it..... now rectify those and respeak on the same topic again.....continue this until you are satisfied wid your response on that particular topic.....
Organizing your speech is also important.... make the use of paper and then jot down the key points(words) on which you are going to speak and give them a priority number.... u'll start your response with the highest prio. point ...and then the next best priority ... and so on.... on your actual test u'll get approx. 15/20 seconds to prepare your response.... many ppl will find it difficlut to do all this(noting points & organizing them) in such short period of time .....even i did find it difficlut at the starting.... but u'll improve as you keep on practicing on number of topics.....and doing this really helps.
You need not (should not) speak in a different accent..... they are not looking for your accent... they just want to know how organized is your speech, how fluent you are, how coherent is your talk and how intelligibly you speak.....
You may speak what ever you like.....(unless u speak bad on america).... you need not give a perfect/nice sounding answer.... you just speak your mind.....
Practice Softwares-->
Kaplan-TOEFL iBT (4 full length tests)
Longman-TOEFL iBT(2 full length + 8 mini tests + lot of practice questions)
Barrons-TOEFL iBT(7 full length)
u can get all these softwares on the internet for free if you search properly... also try out torrents and p-p softwares like ARES,BIT COMET,LIMEWIRE etc. I found the questions on kaplan s/w to be the actual level of the exam. It even has the sample speaking responses...worth listening....
