Perhaps the most important thing on your whole application is your SOP...... typically you need to spend 20 days properly... for your sop to sound impressive...... start by writing a rough draft .....starting with your rough copy of sop is the most difficult part...once you are done wid the initial rough draft, refine it again and again...... taking the guidance of frnds/seniors etc.....
Typically these 3 topics MUST be answered in your SOP....
1) What are your intersets/goals?
2) Why You? (Why should the univ choose/admit you)...u'll explain hare, what u've done/gained from your UG study
3) Why Them (Why did you choose that univ)...... its better to write something unique abt that univ (instead of writing....awesome faculty, mind boggling technology labs... blah blah) so that your credibility will be increased......and they get to understand that its not the common SOP you send to all the univs.
as a student from NIT, You need to focus on the projects you have done and how did they make you fit for the graduate study in US.......glorifying your projects(to sound Hi-Fi) to a certain extent is acceptable....
u gotta talk only abt your Btech study....Donot write your childhood achievements unless they are really really significant....
u can also include a small para on your extra curricular activities.......but this is not what the univ is looking in you for.....if you are good at extra-curriculars....its fine....but what they are lookin for ....is the work done in your BTech....and are u fit enough to match their high course/research load or not.
a typical SOP will run from 1 page to 2 pages..... but certainly not more than 2 pages.... nobody has the patience to read all your lengthy crap...... J
An SOP should not be written as a list of all your achievements.... u have a resume/CV for that..... but sop is something more deep… focusing more on your areas of interest.
Try to avoid the usage of “Maulana Azad” (in MANIT) in your sop…instead write “NIT-Bhopal”…… this is because the Americans do not like islam and they might feel that ours is some local private muslim institution/college …… anyway… u don’t need to bother about this more….as this hardly matters…..
