Letter Of Recomendations

Posted by Quality Blogger

Most of the univs require you to take recommendation letters from 3 ppl capable of judging your caliber.... In most cases, recommenders are our teachers..... here are some of the points useful for choosing a recommender.....

a) Order of weightage of the recommender's designation....... i.e a Professor's reco has more weight than an Asst. Prof's recco and an Asst. Professor's reco has more weightage compared to a Lecturer.....
b) Its good to have Doctorate (Dr.) prefix to your recommender.....
c) If your recommender has a good profile...(like a PhD in IIT's (OR) PhD in a foreign univ. etc...) make it sure to mention them in the reco letter..... like (Mr.xxx, B.Tech NIT b, M.Tech IIT b, PhD xxx univ.).....
d) If you have done a project/internship under a renowned person like an IIT professor / high profile industry person...... try to get a reco from them too......

given the above conditions... it does not mean that if your recommender knows you personally, u can get a good reco carrying weight...... i mean .... your recommender has to know you professionally... like your teacher/Proj Guide etc.... Eg: reco's having sentences like....("Though i never taught/guided this student....i know this candidate from my childhood personally and he's awesome hardworker...blah blah ") does not work ......they need to mention on the reco letter, how he's got to know the applicant professionally....

Approaching for your reco letter :--

Ask your teacher for some free time..... meet him/her personally.... then tell him your requirement..... also discuss about the projects/courses u've done under his/her guidance...... explain everything in a systematic way..... and tell that you need a reco letter from their side........ if the teacher asks yourself to write the reco letter, dont get surprised......consider it a good opportunity...... draft a rough copy of the letter yourself..... show it to him/her ...... make any changes if necessary.....and then finalize......you gotta print this finalized matter on your institutional/departmental 'letter head' ... and get it signed ....lets call this your "Finalized Letter"

Many univs have their own special recommendation letter format.....
Now after finalizing the univs u gotta apply..... u need to take printout of their format for each univ...... and get them filled by your recommender......lets call this filled form (spl univ. specific format) as "FORM-1"
((Remember that 'TO PRINT' is to write in BLOCK LETTERS with a pen, but not to get it printed using a printer/typewriter))

Now.....your "Finalized Letter" along with this "FORM-1" makes your reco letter complete......keep in mind that there shouldn't be much difference in the signing dates of FORM-1 and "Finalized Letter" (infact....its better if they both are dated/signed on the same day)

Now you need to put these "FORM-1" + "Finalized Letter" into an envelope......stick it....and get it signed across the flaps of the envelope(both sides....) by your recommender..... u also need to get his personal/departmental seal at the place where he puts his signature on the envelope...... this is for making sure that the letter has not been tampered/manipulated since it has been issued to you......and dont forget to stick a cello tape on his/her signature on the envelope...... ALSO .... write the univ name with a pencil on a corner your envelope(for your identification).....so that you wont endup sending one univ's reco to another univ.....as you cant make out after sealing the envelope, to which univ this reco belongs to :-)
